If you’re preparing for your newborn session, there are a few simple newborn session hacks that can make a world of difference—for both a smooth experience and those dreamy, sleepy images everyone loves. After photographing so many sweet little ones, I’ve learned that a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you’re a new mom or a photographer, these tips will help you feel confident and ready going into your session.

One of the most important newborn session hacks is timing. Aim to schedule your session within 7–10 days after birth. I know—this is when you feel the most tired and least “photo ready,” but trust me on this one. Babies are naturally sleepier during this window, which allows for those peaceful, curled-up poses. If your baby arrives early, you may have a little more flexibility, but in general, earlier is better for a smooth session.
Feeding plays a huge role in your baby’s comfort. Try to feed your baby right before the session begins. This may mean waking them a few hours prior so you can time that full feeding perfectly. A full baby = a sleepy baby. Between that feeding and the one before, keep your baby as awake as possible—talking, singing, bathing, or gently playing can all help.
It’s also helpful to have a pacifier or small bottle ready, even if you don’t typically use one. This can quickly soothe baby if they start to stir mid-session. And after that final feeding, consider handing baby off to dad or your photographer—sometimes the scent of mom makes them want to keep nursing instead of settling to sleep.
Let’s talk wardrobe—because this is hard when you are just 7-10 days postpartum. You just had a baby, so give yourself grace. Maternity-friendly outfits are absolutely perfect here. Choose something comfortable that makes you feel beautiful.
If your session is at home, go ahead and turn your thermostat up to around 75 degrees. A warm environment keeps baby cozy and sleepy. Also, gather any props you love—headbands, swaddles, sentimental items—and have them ready before we start. And if you don’t have anything, let your photographer know so she can bring some of her things with her!
Photographers, these newborn session hacks are total game changers. First—timing still matters. Encouraging clients to schedule within that early window will set you up for success from the start.
One of my absolute must-haves is an under-swaddle wrap with silent Velcro. This keeps baby snug and secure without waking them, while allowing you to layer a more aesthetic swaddle on top. It truly makes posing smoother and keeps baby asleep longer.
Another essential? A space heater. Not only does it keep your shooting area warm and comfortable, but the soft hum also acts as white noise—helping soothe baby naturally.
Lastly, don’t overlook your setup. Layering your backdrops can help eliminate wrinkles and create a smoother, more polished final image. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in your overall gallery.
These newborn session hacks are all about creating a calm, comfortable environment where baby can rest—and where everyone can enjoy the experience. A little intention on the front end leads to a session that feels easy, natural, and beautifully documented.
